Bitvavo, one of Europe’s leading digital asset trading platforms, has obtained a licence in the Netherlands under the new European Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). This licence enables Bitvavo to offer its services across all EU member states, (as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) under a single harmonised regulatory framework.

MiCAR introduces uniform European rules for crypto service providers, making the trading of crypto-assets safer and establishing a consistent supervisory framework. As a result, MiCAR ultimately provides better protection for users. The harmonised framework also makes it possible to serve both retail and institutional clients without the complexity of separate national registration requirements.

Bitvavo has consistently advocated for the development of such a level playing field. Under MiCAR, all market participants will operate in line with clear and consistent legislation.

Level Playing Field

“This licence is an important milestone for Bitvavo and our users,” said Jeetan Patel, Chief Risk Officer at Bitvavo. “It enables us to offer our services across Europe under a single licence. Over the past period, we have taken all necessary steps in the licensing process and have ensured compliance with the comprehensive MiCAR regulatory requirements. We highly value the constructive collaboration with the AFM throughout this process. It has progressed efficiently.”

Mark Nuvelstijn, CEO and co-founder of Bitvavo, added: “We fully support the core principles of MiCAR. For a level playing field in Europe, it is essential that the rules are formulated and enforced consistently across all member states. This licence provides clarity, confidence, and enables Bitvavo to fulfil its ambition: to become the leading digital asset trading platform in Europe. In many markets, Bitvavo appears to have a strong product-market fit due to a combination of a wide range of tradable digital assets, a state-of-the-art app and platform, and low trading fees.”

Bitvavo is currently the largest player globally in the EUR spot market.

European Market Leadership

The MiCA licence marks the next step in Bitvavo’s strategic journey toward European market leadership. Bitvavo already held registrations in several major European countries, including France, Austria, Italy, and Spain, in addition to the Netherlands.

With this licence, Bitvavo can now offer its services in an even greater number of countries.
