Bitvavo makes Arbitrum as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.
Arbitrum is a layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum designed to address some of the biggest challenges of blockchain technology: scalability, speed, and cost. As Ethereum grew in popularity as a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps), transaction fees increased significantly. The network became increasingly congested.
Arbitrum offers a solution by making transactions more efficient and cheaper, without compromising security. At the heart of Arbitrum's technology are the so-called 'optimistic rollups'. This is a technique that executes transactions outside the Ethereum blockchain (off-chain), then bundles them and sends them to the Ethereum blockchain (on-chain). This way of processing transactions reduces the load on the network and speeds up transaction processing.
With Arbitrum, users can transact faster and cheaper on the Ethereum network. Developers also benefit as they can build on Arbitrum just as easily as they can on Ethereum. The same development tools are available there.
The ARB token plays an important role in the governance of Arbitrum. Token holders can participate in the Arbitrum DAO, the decentralized governance behind Arbitrum, which runs directly on the blockchain.
Arbitrum aims to make transactions more efficient and cheaper. It has the following usage features:
Arbitrum uses a technology called 'optimistic rollups', where transactions are processed in batches (groups) outside of the Ethereum blockchain. By sending the transactions to Ethereum in batches, the costs can be shared and users pay lower transaction fees. The batches are sent to the Ethereum blockchain and stored in the blocks there.
Arbitrum initially assumes that all transactions are valid, hence the name 'optimistic' rollup, after which there is a certain period of time in which anyone can declare a transaction as fraudulent. To file a complaint, a node must stake ARB tokens. If the node is wrong, it loses the staked tokens. If the transaction is indeed wrong and the node is right, it receives ARB tokens as a reward.
Arbitrum uses the Arbitrum Virtual Machine (AVM), a variant of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) that has been specially adapted for the layer 2 scaling protocol. The AVM runs on top of the EthBridge and is used by developers to program and execute smart contracts. Ethereum smart contracts can also be executed by the AVM, which ensures high compatibility with Ethereum.
Within AVM, developers can use familiar programming languages like Solidity to build dApps. Arbitrum supports most Ethereum development tools, making the transition easier for developers.
Arbitrum Nova was launched in August 2022 and is an extension of the Arbitrum ecosystem that focuses primarily on high-throughput dApps, especially gaming. It is built on AnyTrust technology to further scale Ethereum and offers lower transaction fees.
Unlike Arbitrum One, the first scaling protocol, Nova uses a Data Availability Committee (DAC) to manage transaction data, making for a more efficient and somewhat centralized system. This makes Arbitrum Nova an attractive option for applications that require high transaction volumes without the need for full decentralization.
There are more scalable protocols that process transactions faster and cheaper, however, Arbitrum is unique for the following reasons:
