Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Verge as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Verge (XVG) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that aims to keep transactions anonymous and untraceable. In addition to prioritizing user privacy, Verge also strives for high throughput and fast processing times. Verge is completely open-source and is not only led by a company or foundation, but also by the community behind Verge.

Verge tackles privacy from the perspective of how the user connects to the network. To do this, it uses Tor, a well-known network known for keeping IP addresses secret. Through the network, all data is encrypted across large numbers of machines, making it difficult to trace transactions back to their origin. This ensures that the entire Verge blockchain remains anonymous.

A key feature of Verge is the Wraith Protocol they use, which gives users the choice of conducting public or private blockchain transactions. Public transactions are transparent and fast, while private transactions remain completely invisible. The private transactions are sent to Stealth addresses, which are one-time addresses that should make it impossible to trace back to their owner.

XVG is Verge’s native token and is used to pay transaction fees and governance functions. Additionally, Verge uses the Electrum wallet, which supports Tor and I2P integration, allowing users to store and send XVG anonymously and securely.

Who founded Verge (XVG)?

Verge was founded in 2014 by Justin Valo as DogeCoinDark and rebranded as Verge in 2016. Justin Valo, also known as Justin Vendetta or Sunerok, has over 20 years of experience in cybersecurity and nearly a decade in blockchain technology. He originally developed Verge as a hobby to provide users with more privacy, but the project quickly grew into a well-known blockchain and cryptocurrency.

Verge can be used for anonymous transactions, fast and efficient payments, and payments via messaging applications:

  • Anonymous transactions: Verge offers the ability to conduct transactions without being traced back to the user, thanks to the integration of technologies such as Tor, I2P and Stealth addresses.
  • Fast and efficient payments: Verge focuses on fast transaction processing and therefore provides an efficient payment network.
  • Payments through applications: Users can send XVG tokens through platforms such as Telegram, Discord, and Twitter, increasing Verge's user-friendliness.

Verge uses advanced technologies to protect both the identity of users and their transactions. The blockchain has implemented Tor and I2P to anonymize transactions, keeping the identity of users safe. Neither senders and receivers of XVG transactions need to worry about traceability.

Wraith Protocol and Stealth addresses

Verge’s Wraith Protocol gives users the option of carrying out transactions on a public or private blockchain. This gives users the option of extra protection. Stealth addresses are single-use addresses, ensuring that the recipient’s privacy is protected.

Multi-algorithm mining

Verge uses a multi-algorithm consensus mechanism, meaning that XVG can be mined in five different ways. These algorithms are Scrypt, X17, Lyra2rev2, myr-groestl, and blake2s. Allowing miners to use different mechanisms makes mining Verge more accessible, increasing the decentralization and security of the network.

Rootstock and smart contracts

Developers can program smart contracts and build decentralized applications (dApps) on Verge using Rootstock, a sidechain with smart contract functionality, similar to Ethereum.

Atomic swaps

Atomic swaps enable cross-chain transactions. This means that users can move tokens between different blockchains without a third party. The atomic swaps improve interoperability with other cryptocurrencies.

XVG is Verge’s native cryptocurrency, designed to enable fast, secure, and anonymous transactions within the Verge network. There are currently 16.52 billion XVG tokens in circulation. Verge aims to keep the value of individual tokens low by having a large number of tokens in circulation, preventing market manipulation.

The Verge coin gives users governance roles within Verge. They can use their tokens to make decisions about upgrades and submit new proposals. In addition, the XVG coin is also a reward tool for miners, who use computing power to contribute to the operation and security of the Verge network.

Verge (XVG) can be mined because the Verge blockchain uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. The mechanism, which is similar to Bitcoin, supports five different mining algorithms. With more options, more people can participate in the mining process which improves network security. Multi-algorithm mining also improves the decentralization of the network, because there are different types of mining equipment running on the network.

Verge distinguishes itself from other blockchains and cryptocurrencies in the following features, including:

  • Focus on privacy: Verge provides users with anonymity by integrating Tor and I2P networks, allowing users to hide their identity.
  • Multi-algorithm mining: The blockchain supports five different mining algorithms, leading to greater decentralization and security.
  • Wraith protocol: This protocol allows users to choose between public and private transactions on the blockchain.
  • Stealth addresses: Using one-time addresses for each transaction better protects user privacy.
  • Rootstock: This technology adds smart contracts on a sidechain to Verge, allowing users to develop decentralized applications.

What is the difference between Verge and Bitcoin?

While Verge and Bitcoin are both cryptocurrencies and run on their own decentralized network, they are very different. Verge focuses on privacy and anonymity, with features like Tor and I2P for IP secrecy and the Wraith Protocol for conducting private transactions. Bitcoin does not offer these capabilities, nor does it support multi-algorithm mining, unlike Verge.
