Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Quant as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Quant is a blockchain and ecosystem that connects public and private networks. It does this by providing a foundation for other blockchains, which is why Quant is also called a layer 0 blockchain. It solves the problem of interoperability, which means that many individual blockchain networks cannot interoperate or communicate with each other. With its overledger operating system, Quant solves this problem and allows the network to seamlessly connect.

The Overledger is the world’s first blockchain operating system, designed to connect blockchains and networks. Overledger enables developers to create multi-chain applications (mApps) that work across multiple blockchains. Overledger is similar to Windows or iOS, which are operating systems that allow different computer programs to communicate and work together. Because Quant focuses on improving interoperability, it can be deployed across industries, including finance and healthcare, without disrupting existing systems.

QNT is the cryptocurrency of Quant and has several functions within the ecosystem. It is a means of payment for products on Quant, such as APIs and connections between different blockchains and systems. Additionally, gateway operators use QNT tokens to pay annual license fees to be part of the Overledger Network.

Who founded Quant (QNT)?

Quant was founded by Gilbert Verdian in 2015. Verdian, who has a background in healthcare and has held government roles in the UK and Australia, saw the need for improved communication and interoperability between disparate databases and networks. This led to the development of Quant and the Overledger operating system. The team behind Quant consists of experts from diverse backgrounds ranging from blockchain to enterprise development, adding to the platform’s strength and versatility.

Quant is suitable for developers, crypto traders and end users alike. Quant’s applications and functionalities include:

  • Stablecoin minting: Quant enables the creation of stablecoins, using multi-ledger tokens (MLTs) on different blockchain protocols.
  • Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs): The Overledger supports the development and governance of CBDCs, which can operate on both blockchain and traditional platforms.
  • Supply chain management: By integrating different blockchains, Quant improves traceability and efficiency in supply chain management.
  • Payments and micropayments: Quant supports payment processes, including micropayments, and enables payments between different blockchains.
  • Marketplaces and invoice financing: Quant enables organizations to create new marketplaces and provides invoice financing solutions.

While Quant is seen as a blockchain, Overledger is actually a DLT gateway and not a blockchain, which allows companies to connect different networks and systems. Overledger is designed as a platform and marketplace where different APIs facilitate the connection between these systems.

Different layers in the Overledger

Quant's network consists of several layers, each performing specific tasks, including the:

  • Transaction layer: Validated transactions are stored in this layer and consensus on transactions across blockchains is reached here.
  • Messaging layer: At this layer, applications communicate with each other and transactions from different blockchains are collected.
  • Filtering and ordering layer: All data collected by the messaging layer is first checked, filtered and converted into readable information.
  • Application layer: This layer sends the messages from the filtering and ordering layer to the appropriate applications and networks.

Multi-chain applications (mApps)

Developers have the ability to create mApps that can operate on multiple blockchains simultaneously. This is different from traditional decentralized applications (dApps) that are limited to a single blockchain network. Quant does not use smart contracts to create mApps, but treaty contracts. These allow users to build applications on multiple blockchains.

QNT is Quant’s native token and plays a key role in the Quant ecosystem. The QNT token which uses the ERC20 token protocol, serves several functions, including as a means of payment for the platform or paying for annual licenses. QNT is also used for Quant staking, and validators receive rewards in the form of QNT tokens.
You can stake Quant to earn passive income from the Quant ecosystem. Overledger gateway operators stake QNT tokens to be chosen to validate transactions, for which they receive a reward. Users can set up an operator themselves or delegate their stake to an existing gateway operator. The rewards are distributed among all who contributed.

Quant facilitates communication between different blockchains and is therefore unique, but it also distinguishes itself in other ways:

  • Interoperability between blockchains: Quant’s Overledger enables communication between different blockchains, allowing for seamless collaboration between different networks.
  • Multi-chain applications (mApps): Unlike many other blockchains, developers can create mApps that run on multiple blockchains simultaneously.
  • The first blockchain operating system: The Overledger is a patented technology and the world's first blockchain operating system.

What is the difference between Quant and Ethereum?

Both Quant and Ethereum provide a platform for application development and maintenance and both have a decentralized network. Despite this, Quant and Ethereum are very different from each other.

Ethereum is a blockchain that focuses on providing a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). Quant, on the other hand, is not a blockchain, but a DLT gateway that connects different blockchains and systems. Quant improves interoperability between blockchains and supports the creation of multi-chain applications, while Ethereum focuses primarily on building applications within its own network.
