What is POL?

Polygon is an Ethereum sidechain aiming to transform Ethereum into the “Internet of blockchains”. Polygon SDK, the platform’s main component, is a modular and flexible framework that facilitates the creation of scalable and interoperable blockchain networks in the Polygon ecosystem. Developers can use the SDK to build custom chains and decentralized applications by leveraging Polygon’s scalability solutions and Ethereum compatibility. Polygon expanded in 2021 from the Matic Network and now offers optimistic rollup chains, ZK rollup chains, PoS blockchain bridges, and other scaling solutions for developers. POL replaced MATIC in 2024 as the native gas and staking token for the Polygon PoS network.
