How to protect your crypto

In crypto, security isn’t static; it’s a shared responsibility. While we’ve built a platform designed to withstand pressure, the final layer of defense is you. Knowing how to secure your account puts the power in your hands, and helps us protect the ecosystem together.

In this article, we’ll walk you through how to take full control of your Bitvavo account security setup.

Bitvavo’s security systems are designed to keep your assets safe behind the scenes.Ā

These platform-level protections are designed to work in tandem with the security actions we ensure our users are empowered to take.

This quick guide walks you throughĀ three simple actions you can take today to strengthen your account security.Ā

1. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

2FA adds an extra layer of protection to your account by requiring a second step at login, usually through an authenticator app. This ensures that a password alone is not enough to gain access.

Accounts without 2FA are more vulnerable to attacks, and are not eligible forĀ Bitvavo’s Account GuaranteeĀ (our wallet protection coverage of up to €100,000 requires 2FA to be enabled for at least 30 days).Ā

Action: Go to your security settings andĀ enable 2FA. It takes less than a minute.

2. Set a custom anti-phishing code

Phishing remains one of the most common ways scammers try to access crypto accounts. FakeĀ phishing emails, texts, and calls can seem legitimate, but a simple feature can help you tell the difference.

When you create a customĀ anti-phishing code, it will appear in every real email from Bitvavo that asks you to verify or confirm any personal account details. If the code is missing from these kinds of communications, the message is likely fake.

Action:Ā Create your custom anti-phishing code in your security settings.

3. Lock down withdrawals and email

The most direct way to prevent unauthorized withdrawals is toĀ disable crypto withdrawals entirely. If your account is ever compromised, this setting blocks assets from being moved until fully verified by you.

Your email is just as important. If someone gains access to your inbox, they may be able to reset your account.

Best practices:

  • Enable 2FA on your email account

  • Periodically checkĀ haveibeenpwned.com to see if your email has been exposed

  • Consider using a separate email just for Bitvavo

Action:Ā Lock withdrawals and review your email security today.

You control your access. We protect your assets.

Each of these tools can be activated in your account in minutes, and—together with the myriadĀ tools Bitvavo uses to protect your assets—taking the steps outlined above can significantly reduce your exposure to common threats.

Simply put: Bitvavo’s systems areĀ built to keep your crypto safe, but your actions can add a strong layer of protection against the most common threats.
