Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Nervos Network as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Nervos Network, also known as the Common Knowledge Base (CKB), is an open-source blockchain platform launched in 2019. It features a multi-layer architecture combining flexibility, security, and scalability without compromising any of these characteristics. The core of the network, CKB, acts as a secure storage layer for all data and value within the ecosystem. This foundational layer provides security and decentralization, while layer 2 solutions focus on scalability and faster transaction processing.

A unique aspect of the Nervos Network is the Cell model, a data storage structure similar to Bitcoin's UTXO model (Unspent Transaction Output). Cells serve as building blocks for data storage, supporting functions like decentralized identities and digital assets. This versatility allows the network to support a wide range of applications, from simple transactions to advanced dApps.

Nervos is one of the few blockchains utilizing Proof-of-Work (PoW) combined with an enhanced consensus mechanism, NC-MAX. This optimization increases PoW efficiency with improved block propagation and faster transaction speeds, allowing the network to handle high transaction volumes without compromising security.

Another important feature is the dual issuance model of the CKB tokens. The primary issuance is similar to Bitcoin's, with a maximum supply and halving schedule. Additionally, there is a secondary issuance that rewards users for storing data on the network, contributing to sustainable blockchain management.

Who founded Nervos Network?

Nervos Network was founded by a team of blockchain experts including Jan Xie, Terry Tai, and Kevin Wang. Jan Xie, a former researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has extensive experience in blockchain development. Terry Tai is an early blockchain developer and co-founder of Yunbi, a Chinese crypto exchange. Kevin Wang, with a background in education and engineering, focuses on community and ecosystem development at Nervos.

The project is backed by the Nervos Foundation, overseeing the technical and strategic growth of the network. The team, comprising dozens of members, collaborates closely with partners in the crypto and tech industries.

Nervos Network offers various applications and features designed for both end users and developers, creating a secure, scalable, and interoperable ecosystem:

  • Data storage: Nervos uses the Cell model for secure data storage on the blockchain, providing flexibility and versatility.
  • Smart contracts: The network supports the development and execution of smart contracts with the CKB-VM, a virtual machine based on RISC-V.
  • Decentralized Identities (DIDs): Nervos enables the management of identities across different blockchains, ideal for interoperability and privacy protection.
  • Digital Objects (DOBs): The Spore protocol on Nervos allows users to create and manage unique digital objects, ensuring true ownership.
  • Cross-chain interoperability: Thanks to isomorphic binding, Bitcoin assets can be safely transferred to Nervos, facilitating collaboration between the two networks.
  • Secure value storage: CKB tokens serve as store of value, granting access to storage space on the blockchain.

Nervos Network is structured with multiple layers, each serving a specific function. It utilizes NC-MAX, an enhanced version of the PoW consensus mechanism based on Bitcoin's Nakamoto consensus model. NC-MAX optimizes efficiency and speed by accelerating block propagation, leading to faster dissemination of new blocks through the network. This reduces the risk of double spending and enhances transaction efficiency and security.

NC-MAX also offers increased resistance to attacks. The incentive model rewards honest participants, enhancing the security and robustness of the network.

The Cell model

The Cell model is based on the UTXO model of Bitcoin, but also supports smart contracts and digital objects. Each cell can function as a digital locker, storing various data instead of just transaction information. This flexibility makes cells suitable for a variety of applications, from dApps to decentralized identities.

Each cell is 'consumed' when stored data is updated, promoting transparency and security.

CKB-VM

The CKB-VM (Virtual Machine) is an advanced virtual machine based on the RISC-V instruction set. It supports executing smart contracts and integrating various cryptographic technologies, providing a sustainable and future-proof solution for the Nervos ecosystem.

Isomorphic binding

A unique feature of Nervos is the ability to transfer Bitcoins directly to Nervos without a cross-chain bridge. The isomorphic binding mechanism links a Bitcoin UTXO to a cell on Nervos, enabling secure and seamless asset transfer. This enhances both user-friendliness and network interoperability.

The CKB token is the native token of the Nervos Network and plays a crucial role within the ecosystem. It is used for paying transaction fees and represents storage rights on the blockchain. Each CKB token grants access to one byte of storage space on the blockchain, creating demand among developers and users. In addition to its functional use, the CKB token also holds economic value.

The total supply of CKB tokens is intelligently designed. The primary issuance follows a hard cap and halving schedule similar to Bitcoin, ensuring a limited supply in the long term. Additionally, Nervos has a secondary issuance with no maximum supply, aimed at encouraging users to store data and ensuring ongoing rewards for miners. This combination balances economic stability with growth opportunities in the network.

Although Nervos Network utilizes a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism for security, it allows users to stake their CKB tokens through NervosDAO, a Decentralized Autonomous Organization. By staking their CKB in NervosDAO, CKB holders can earn periodic rewards from the network's secondary token issuance.

Staking CKB is simple and can be done through official Nervos wallets. Users can "lock" their tokens in the NervosDAO to earn rewards.

Nervos Network stands out in the blockchain world with unique features that enhance both the technical structure and usability. Here are five characteristics that make Nervos Network special:

  • Cell-driven storage structure: Nervos utilizes an innovative Cell model where each cell acts as a storage and execution unit, similar to a digital safe. This allows for flexible storage and the implementation of complex dApps without being tied to one data structure.
  • Isomorphic binding with Bitcoin: Nervos offers a unique technology called isomorphic binding, allowing Bitcoin coins to be transferred directly and securely to the Nervos Network without external bridges, increasing interoperability.
  • CKB-VM with RISC-V instruction set: The CKB-VM supports almost every cryptographic technology using the open-source RISC-V instruction set, providing flexibility and future expansions. This gives developers the freedom to integrate new cryptographic standards.
  • Dual token issuance with state rent solution: Nervos has a unique economic model with dual token issuance. In addition to a limited supply, the model offers a secondary issuance to address the 'state rent' issue. This allows users to sustainably store data while also rewarding miners continuously.
