Bitvavo makes Mask Network as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.
Mask Network is a protocol that acts as a bridge between traditional social media (Web 2.0) and emerging Web3 technologies. The goal of this project is to promote the adoption of cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) by making them available on trusted social media platforms. This allows users to use these products without leaving their platform.
Mask Network has several features. Users can send encrypted messages, make crypto payments, trade NFTs, and access a wide range of dApps, all within the interface of their favorite social network. This is made possible through a browser extension, making the transition to Web3 easy.
MASK is the token of Mask Network and has several functions within the protocol. It acts as a governance token, meaning that holders can vote on decisions that affect the future direction of the project. MASK is an ERC-20 token that runs on the Ethereum blockchain, but the protocol is also compatible with other blockchains via the Mask Bridge.
Mask Network was created by Suji Yan, a software developer who first encountered cryptocurrency and blockchain around 2014. The idea for Mask Network was born in 2017, but the protocol wasn’t launched until 2019. In addition to Mask Network, Suji Yan is also the founder and CEO of Dimension Mechanics, Inc. She studied at the University of Tokyo and computer science at the University of Illinois, but dropped out of college in 2017.
The project is managed by MaskDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization whose ownership and governance are in the hands of the community and token holders. The team behind Mask Network consists of over 70 people.
Mask Network has several features and can be applied in various situations:
Mask Network works with various blockchain networks and acts as a layer on top of existing social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Users can install Mask Network’s browser extension, which allows them to use various blockchain features directly from their social media accounts.
A key aspect of Mask Network is its support for multiple blockchains, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, xDAI/Gnosis Chain, Fantom, Solana, Avalanche, Aurora, and Flow. Through cross-chain bridges, users can use the various dApps of these blockchains directly from their social media accounts. For example, it is possible to trade crypto via Uniswap on your Facebook feed.
Users who have installed the Mask Network browser extension can encrypt all their messages with end-to-end encryption. Only users who also have Mask Network installed can decrypt encrypted messages and read the content, adding an extra layer of protection and privacy to communications.
For encryption, the protocol uses Elliptic Curve Integrated Encryption Scheme (ECIES), an asymmetric encryption method that uses the public keys of the intended recipients and the private keys of the sender to encrypt the AES-256 key. This provides an additional layer of encryption security to the key. The AES key is stored on GunDB nodes. When a user wants to decrypt a message, their private key is used to decrypt the AES key, after which the message can be read.
The MASK token is used to pay for certain services within the network, to execute transactions and as a means of reward. In addition, the MASK token plays an important role in the governance of the protocol. Token holders can influence decision-making within the network by voting on proposals in the MaskDAO.
There are a maximum of 100 million tokens available. The distribution of MASK according to the Mask Network tokenomics is as follows:
Mask Network raised funds to fund the project’s development in a unique manner through an Initial Twitter Offering (ITO). Similar to an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), the ITO allowed users to purchase a limited number of tokens after completing specific tasks on social media, such as posting tweets, following social media accounts, and joining Mask Network’s Telegram group. After completing these tasks, users could claim and purchase their tokens.
This way of raising money has helped raise awareness of the project and build a committed community.
Mask Network is a unique project for several reasons:
