Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Lisk as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Lisk is a blockchain platform that helps developers build Web3 applications. Using JavaScript, a widely used programming language, developers can launch their own sidechains that are compatible with the Lisk blockchain. This makes Lisk accessible to developers of all levels.

Lisk has developed its own platform to address the blockchain trilemma, which states that decentralization, security, and scalability cannot coexist. Lisk’s Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism offers a solution to this problem, as it is both energy efficient and fast.

Users can take advantage of different products and services, such as Lisk Core, Lisk Service, Lisk Desktop and Lisk Mobile. Each of these products is designed to meet different needs within the ecosystem.

The LSK token plays a central role within the Lisk network. It is used as a means of payment for transactions, voting rights, registration of multi-signature wallets and more.

Who founded Lisk?

Lisk was founded in 2016 by Max Kordek and Olivier Beddows. The project emerged from a fork of Crypti, an earlier JavaScript-based cryptocurrency that the duo launched in 2014. The Lisk team manages the project and aims to position Lisk as the most accessible blockchain application platform in the world.

Lisk has several features and applications, including:

  • Decentralized Application (dApp) development: Developers can easily build and deploy dApps using the modular Lisk SDK (Software Development Kit) and JavaScript.
  • Launching sidechains: Users and developers can create their own blockchains connected to the Lisk mainchain using LSK tokens. This allows for customization and scalability within the ecosystem.
  • Executing transactions: Users can use LSK tokens for various types of transactions within the network, such as voting and registering multi-signature wallets.

The Lisk platform uses the Lisk SDK (Software Development Kit), which allows developers to build scalable Web3 applications in JavaScript. These applications each run on their own blockchain (sidechain), which allows for greater flexibility and scalability. The Lisk SDK is modular, which makes it easier for developers to add or remove modules during development.

Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS)

Lisk uses a DPoS consensus mechanism, where token holders vote on a limited number of delegates who are responsible for validating transactions and creating new blocks. This system is designed to be efficient and democratic, with an emphasis on community participation in the security and governance of the network.

Interoperability

A key aspect of Lisk is its focus on interoperability between blockchains. Through a standardized messaging system, sidechains can communicate with each other and the main chain. This opens the door for various interactions between different blockchains within the Lisk ecosystem, creating a more connected and functionally diverse blockchain space.

Lisk Core and Services

Lisk Core is the software that runs on the network’s nodes. It is responsible for synchronizing the blockchain and executing transactions. Lisk Service acts as a data provider, delivering detailed information about the network and its activities to user interfaces such as Lisk Desktop and Lisk Mobile.

LSK is Lisk’s native token and is used to fuel the ecosystem. Users can stake LSK for transactions, vote for delegates in the Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system, register multi-signature wallets, and participate in other network activities. LSK tokens are also used to register new sidechains on the Lisk network.
Staking on the Lisk network involves users staking their LSK tokens to participate in network governance. This is done primarily by voting for delegates who validate and create blocks. By staking LSK, users contribute to the security and decision-making process of the network, while also earning rewards for their involvement. The staking process is accessible via the Lisk Wallet, where users can vote for a list of selected delegates.

Lisk has several features that make it unique and stand out from similar projects:

  • JavaScript SDK: Lisk makes blockchain development accessible by using JavaScript, one of the most popular programming languages in the world. This makes it easier for developers to build on blockchain.
  • Create your own sidechains: Unlike other platforms, Lisk offers the ability to create your own sidechains. This gives developers full control and flexibility over their blockchain applications.
  • DPoS consensus mechanism: Lisk's unique Delegated Proof-of-Stake system provides efficient, democratic voting and network security where power is not concentrated.
  • Interoperability: Lisk is working on advanced interoperability solutions, allowing different blockchains to communicate seamlessly with each other and interact in ways that were not previously possible.

Lisk and Ethereum are both blockchains that support the development of decentralized applications, however, they serve different audiences with unique approaches.

Ethereum is the leading platform for dApps and smart contracts, using the Solidity programming language. Ethereum uses the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Lisk, on the other hand, offers a platform that focuses specifically on developer accessibility by supporting JavaScript. This makes Lisk attractive to a wide range of developers, including those without prior blockchain experience.

Lisk also stands out for its unique approach to scalability and interoperability via sidechains, allowing developers to launch their own blockchain connected to the Lisk network.

While Ethereum focuses on providing a decentralized platform for developing all kinds of dApps and smart contracts, Lisk positions itself more as a user-friendly and accessible platform for developers who want to harness the power of blockchain without learning a new language or understanding complex blockchain concepts.

The Lisk ecosystem consists of various applications that are built using the Lisk SDK. These applications range from financial tools to social networks. Some examples of applications within the Lisk ecosystem are:

  • Bazar: A Web3 app focused on tokenizing goods. It allows supply chain partners to ensure fair deals and verify the legitimacy of products.
  • Colecti: An NFT marketplace where users can buy, sell, and trade digital art.
  • KalipoDAO: A platform that facilitates the creation and management of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). The goal is to make decision-making more democratic and transparent.
