Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Bancor as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Bancor is a blockchain protocol that supports liquidity and exchange of cryptocurrencies. It aims to solve a core problem in the DeFi world: providing continuous liquidity for tokens without traditional market makers such as central exchanges. Bancor instead uses an Automated Market Maker (AMM), allowing users to exchange assets without a middleman.

Bancor offers users the ability to lock cryptocurrencies in liquidity pools and rewards them with a share of trading fees. These rewards motivate users to increase liquidity. The platform runs on both the Ethereum and EOS blockchains and will be supported by more blockchains in the future.

The Bancor Network Token (BNT) is used to facilitate trading between different pools and contributes to the value of the platform by stimulating demand for BNT. This mechanism ensures that demand for BNT grows as the network grows.

Who founded Bancor?

Bancor was founded in 2017 by Guy and Galia Benartzi, with backing from several investors including Tim Draper. The project launched with an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) that raised $153 million and is currently managed by the Swiss non-profit Bprotocol Foundation.

Bancor is a multifunctional platform that offers users various possibilities. The following are the main functions and use cases:

  • Providing liquidity: Users can stake their crypto in one of Bancor’s liquidity pools to provide liquidity. This supports the operation of the decentralized exchange, while stakers receive rewards in the form of a portion of trading fees.
  • Decentralized Exchange: Bancor acts as a decentralized exchange (DEX), where users can directly exchange tokens without any third party intervention.
  • Cross-chain trading: Support for multiple blockchains allows users to trade tokens between different ecosystems seamlessly, making Bancor a key platform for traders looking to trade between different blockchains.
  • Voting rights: BNT token holders have the ability to vote on changes to the protocol, such as upgrades and governance proposals. This ensures democratic and decentralized governance of the platform.

Bancor operates on both the Ethereum and EOS blockchains and uses smart contracts to automate the liquidity provisioning process, leveraging Automated Market Maker (AMM), liquidity pools, oracles, and the Bancor Formula.

Automated Market Maker (AMM)

The Automated Market Maker is at the heart of the Bancor system. Unlike traditional exchanges where buyers and sellers must be matched directly to complete a transaction, the AMM uses algorithms to determine the price of tokens and provide liquidity. This is made possible through liquidity pools.

Liquidity pools

A liquidity pool is a collection of tokens stored in a smart contract. In the case of Bancor, these pools consist of pairs of tokens, such as ETH/BNT, where one of the tokens is always the BNT token. Users can deposit tokens into a pool and in return receive pool tokens, which represent their share of the pool. These pool tokens entitle the user to a share of the trading fees generated by the pool and can later be exchanged for the originally deposited tokens.

Oracles for pricing

Bancor uses oracles to integrate the current prices of tokens within the system. This is especially important for adjusting the ratios between tokens within a pool. Oracles are external services that securely bring real-world data to the blockchain. In Bancor V2, these oracles are used to dynamically adjust the liquidity pools to market changes, minimizing the risks of impermanent loss.

Bancor Formula

The Bancor Formula is an algorithm that automatically calculates the prices of tokens in a pool based on supply and demand. This formula ensures that prices are fair and transparent, and allows users to buy or sell tokens at these prices at any time. The Bancor Formula eliminates the need for a traditional market maker or order book.

The Bancor Network Token, abbreviated as BNT and with a maximum supply of 69 million tokens, is used as a medium of exchange between different tokens on the platform. This makes it easier to exchange different tokens between different liquidity pools. All trading between tokens on the platform is done via BNT. Token holders have the ability to vote on changes to the protocol, including upgrades and proposals, which ensures democratic and decentralized governance of the platform.

Staking BNT is a process where users lock their tokens in a liquidity pool to contribute to the liquidity and receive rewards. These rewards are a portion of the trading fees generated within the specific pool the user contributes to.

To stake BNT, you must use Bancor’s platform and connect a wallet. You then select a pool that accepts BNT and deposit the desired amount of tokens. In return, the user receives pool tokens that represent their share in the pool and their right to future trading fees.

Bancor is a unique and innovative platform within the DeFi space. It distinguishes itself from other projects through the following features (among others):

  • Cross-chain functionality: Bancor supports transactions across multiple blockchains, such as Ethereum and EOS, and has plans to expand the platform to multiple blockchain networks.
  • Automatic price adjustment: Thanks to the integration of oracles, Bancor automatically adjusts the token ratios in the pools based on current market prices. This ensures fair trading and minimizes impermanent loss.
  • Single-token staking: Unlike many other AMMs, Bancor allows users to stake only one token in a pool, making it easier for users to participate.
