Bitvavo makes Aptos as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.
Aptos is a layer 1 blockchain that aims to provide a secure, scalable, and upgradeable infrastructure for Web 3.0. The blockchain addresses some of the major challenges within the blockchain industry.
The core of Aptos is to solve scalability and security issues that are common in existing blockchains. To achieve this, Aptos uses innovative technologies and a unique blockchain architecture. Aptos users benefit from fast and secure transaction processing, as well as a flexible and upgradeable platform that can adapt itself.
APT is the token of Aptos and plays an important role in the ecosystem as it is used to pay transaction fees, governance and as a reward for participants who support the network.
Aptos was founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, both former Meta employees with years of experience in the blockchain industry. They were involved in the development of the Diem blockchain for Meta (then Facebook). Aptos Labs is the current team behind Aptos and now consists of more than 350 employees.
Aptos various applications and functionalities that are suitable for developers, crypto traders and end users. Some of the possible uses include:
The Aptos blockchain uses a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism in combination with a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) system that analyzes the state of the blockchain and automatically updates the validators. Within the network, validators handle transaction processing; partly due to this mechanism, as well as the various scaling solutions, Aptos is able to process up to 160,000 transactions per second.
Aptos uses Block-STM technology that enables modular transaction processing, facilitating multiple transactions processed in parallel, which improves the speed of the blockchain. If a transaction cannot be executed, the blockchain is not interrupted and the processing of other transactions can continue.
The modular model provides high throughput and low latency, but also allows the network to be upgraded without interrupting the blockchain.
In addition to modular transaction processing, Aptos also uses sharding to improve scalability. Sharding allows the network to be divided into smaller parts that function independently of each other.
Aptos’ support for smart contracts makes it suitable for a wide range of Web 3.0 scenarios, including DAOs, NFTs, and decentralized exchanges. The blockchain uses the Move programming language, originally designed for the Diem blockchain and based on Rust, which allows developers to build smart contracts and DeFi applications.
Among other things, the high transaction speed and innovative scaling solutions make Aptos unique. These are the main features that distinguish Aptos from other blockchains and cryptocurrencies:
Although Aptos and Ethereum are both decentralized networks and cryptocurrencies, they do have some key differences. Aptos uses Move as its programming language, while Ethereum uses Solidity. Both blockchains use Proof-of-Stake for consensus, although Aptos’ network offers higher transaction speed and scalability compared to Ethereum. Aptos has implemented several scaling solutions on its own, while Ethereum primarily uses external scaling solutions for faster transaction processing.
