Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo makes Aave as easy as possible. Here are answers to common questions to help you make your first steps in the world of digital assets.

Aave is a platform where users can borrow and lend crypto without requiring traditional financial institutions. It runs on the Ethereum blockchain and uses smart contracts to automate and secure transactions. In doing so, Aave solves the issue of lack of access and control over financial assets in traditional finance.

Users can earn interest on their crypto by lending or borrowing money using crypto as collateral. This is possible without the need for banks or other financial institutions, giving users complete control over their financial assets.

Users receive access to various products and features, such as overcollateralized lending, flash loans (instant loans without collateral that must be repaid within the same transaction), and interest earning. The AAVE token acts as a governance token, allowing holders to vote on changes and upgrades, as well as reduce transaction fees and stake for added network security.

Who founded Aave?

Aave was founded in 2017 by Stani Kulechov, a law student from Helsinki. Originally launched as ETHLend, the platform was developed by a team of experienced professionals from the blockchain and finance sectors. Based in Switzerland, the company has quickly emerged as a leading player in the DeFi sector, with Kulechov as CEO.

Aave is a versatile DeFi platform with diverse applications and features. Here are some key capabilities that Aave offers:

  • Crypto lending: Users can borrow cryptocurrency by using other cryptocurrency as collateral. This provides temporary liquidity or the ability to trade without selling assets.
  • Flash loans: Flash loans allow users to take out and repay loans within a single transaction. This creates opportunities for arbitrage, providing liquidity to other DeFi platforms, or executing transactions without upfront capital.
  • Interest earning: Users can lend their cryptocurrency through Aave’s liquidity pools and earn interest on their crypto. This provides the opportunity to generate passive income without selling anything.
  • Voting rights: By holding and staking AAVE tokens, users gain voting rights within the Aave ecosystem, allowing them to have a say in important protocol changes, improvements, and upgrades.
  • Safety module: Users can stake AAVE tokens in the Safety Module as insurance against shortages in the protocol. Stakers earn rewards by supplying AAVE tokens.
  • Rate switching: Aave offers users the ability to switch between fixed and variable interest rates on loans. This allows them to choose between stability or flexibility depending on market conditions.

The Aave protocol uses smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain to automate the lending and borrowing of cryptocurrencies. These contracts contain rules about interest rates, collateral requirements, and other terms, allowing the system to function without third-party intervention.

Liquidity pools

Liquidity pools are at the heart of Aave. There are multiple pools, each supporting a specific cryptocurrency. Users can deposit their crypto into these pools to earn interest and as a source for loan repayments. The Aave protocol dynamically adjusts interest rates based on supply and demand within each pool.

aTokens

When users deposit assets into a liquidity pool, they receive aTokens as proof of their deposit plus accrued interest. These tokens are pegged to the underlying assets in the pool and allow users to earn interest on their deposited crypto. For example, if a user lends ETH, the user receives aETH; while for ADA, the user receives aADA, and so on. The interest is generated instantly and added to the aToken balance, allowing for instant liquidity and withdrawal.

Flash loans

Flash loans are loans that are made and repaid within a single Ethereum transaction. This allows for complex financial operations without upfront capital, which is ideal for arbitrage, collateral swapping, or certain types of decentralized trading strategies.

With a maximum supply of 16 million tokens, the AAVE token plays a central role in the Aave ecosystem. It can be used to reduce transaction fees on the platform, gain discounts on lending rates, and serve as collateral for loans. AAVE tokens give holders voting rights on the future and development of the protocol.
AAVE staking involves users locking their tokens in the Aave protocol’s Safety Module, which acts as a kind of insurance for the protocol. By staking AAVE, users help ensure the platform’s liquidity and stability, and receive AAVE tokens as a reward. AAVE staking encourages community engagement, strengthens the security and reliability of Aave as a DeFi protocol, and gives users the opportunity to earn passive income.

You can use Aave by logging into the web application and connecting your wallet. To borrow cryptocurrencies on Aave, you first need to deposit cryptocurrencies as collateral. This serves as a guarantee that you can repay the loan. Depending on the LTV (Loan-to-Value) ratio, you can then borrow up to a certain percentage of the value of your collateral.

Aave offers both fixed and variable interest rates, depending on your preference for stability and lower risk versus flexibility and higher risk.

It is important to be aware of the potential risks before participating in Aave. The biggest is the liquidation risk. When you borrow and put up collateral, the market value of the collateral can drop to a certain level, known as the liquidation threshold, which can cause your collateral to be partially or fully liquidated to repay the loan. This means that you could lose your assets if market prices change rapidly.

Aave stands out in the decentralized finance (DeFi) world with its unique approach and innovative features. Here are some aspects that make Aave unique:

  • Dynamic interest rates: Aave allows users to switch between fixed and variable interest rates. This offers the choice between stability with a fixed rate or potentially lower costs with a variable rate.
  • Flash loans: Aave was the first DeFi platform to introduce flash loans. These allow users to borrow and repay capital in a single blockchain transaction, without collateral. This opens up opportunities for arbitrage, self-liquidation, and other financial actions.
  • Decentralized security module: Users collectively contribute to a financial buffer that protects the platform from shortages. This decentralized security module ensures stability, while users receive rewards for their contribution.
  • Diverse support: Aave offers a wide selection of cryptocurrencies that users can borrow and lend, expanding possibilities.
